AROMATHERAPY SAFETY GUIDELINES
When used correctly essential oils are safe and pleasant to use. They are, however, very concentrated and powerful compounds so certain precautions should be followed. If you have any concerns about their use or effects please consult a qualified aromatherapist or seek medical advice.
General guidelines for safe use:
- Never take essential oils internally.
- Avoid contact with eyes and mucus membranes.
- Seek professional advice before use if pregnant. NB. Essential oils should never be used in the first trimester of pregnancy.
- Seek medical advice before use if you suffer from epilepsy, high blood pressure or liver disorders.
- If you have allergies and/or sensitive skin a patch test is recommended before use.
- If you have an adverse reaction to essential oil, discontinue use and seek professional advice.
- Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or before using a sunbed if you use citrus oil.
Contra-indications:
- Pregnancy
- Epilepsy
- High/Low blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Alcohol
Storage
Essential oils are purely natural extracts from plants. They do have a shelf life and will eventually deteriorate; once this happens they can cause skin reactions.
To keep them at their best they should be stored as followed:
- Store essential oils in dark glass bottles
- Keep them upright and at room temperature, away from bright sunlight
- Essential oils are highly flammable and also may corrode polished surfaces, plastic and rubber.
- Keep essential oils out of reach of children and pets.
Carrier oils should also be stored correctly away from temperature fluctuations, direct sunlight and tightly sealed.
We would recommend that carrier oils are stored in the fridge to slow deterioration.
